This oldest engineering discipline needs little introduction. There was a time around 18th century when all non-military engineering fell under “Civil Engineering”. With progress in technology ,mechanical and electrical engineering were recognized as the other two disciplines of so called “core engineering”. civil engineering lost some glamour with time; it probably got somewhat diluted and started losing its definition . Architecture came out as a separate discipline leading to more dilution of civil engineering. Civil engineers showed indication of “lack of pride”. Civil engineers forgot that the infrastructure of a country depends on roads, dams, irrigation, bridge, high-rise buildings etc. Which are all under civil engineering.
In West Bengal as well as in India, civil engineering courses were not included in must new engineering collages in the first decade of 21st century causing a huge shortage of civil engineers in the state . The trend is now changing with more collages offering civil engineering. Currently , there is a renewed enthusiasm about civil engineering. We feel that civil engineering is the home of environmental engineering and public health engineering as well and that is why this course has been included in our list of “First Five
Academic objective : To educate our student in both design and the practical aspect of civil engineering and construction management.
